UPEC Press Event and Social Gathering to Mark Global Population Hitting 8 Billion
- November 3, 2022
Please Join UPEC Monday evening November 14 at Proper Burger to Mark the Global Population Reaching 8 Billion.
Hi UPECers: We really hope you can join us in person, at 6pm on Monday, November 14, in a private room at the back of Proper Burger (865 Main Street), when UPEC hosts a gathering and press conference to mark the world’s population crossing the 8 billion mark (which demographers estimate is happening just about on this day). We are certainly not celebrating the 8 billion news. And we do wish to offer a counter-narrative to the inevitable news coverage of this milestone, which will likely focus only on cheesy stuff — who was the 8 billionth baby?! — rather than on the enormously damaging consequences of continued population growth around the world and here in Utah. But this is not a wake, either — it’s an occasion to gather with other folks interested in population/environment issues, to enjoy a couple beers and a burger, and to discuss how we can ease the stress caused by Utah’s own rapidly growing population (Proper’s veggie burgers are excellent!).
The night will begin with a press conference at 6pm, which will include very brief (2-3 minute) presentations by several local groups, including Save our Canyons, the Utah Rivers Council, the League of Women Voters, and Students for the Wasatch. Thereafter, we will simply enjoy casual mingling and discussion over beers and food — so come any time.
Please note that, while outstanding craft adult beverages will be readily available, Proper Burger is a restaurant, so kids are most welcome. We will have some snacks on hand, but Proper is kindly giving us a private room for the night, so please plan to buy some food and drink to support a local restaurant and brewery. The space is a covered outside patio with ample heat lamps. It should be plenty warm, but you may want to bring some layers.
Please save the date, please plan to join us, and please bring someone in tow. If you have any questions, please email us at info@utahpopulation.org or ping us on our social feeds.
